Ulagalanda Perumal Temple in kanchipuram

One of the oldest temples in Kancheepuram, the Ulagalanda Perumal Temple is located at a distance of about half a kilometer from the main centre of the city. This temple is located near to the Kamakshi Amman Temple and is one of the most visitd of the religious places in Kancheepuram. The main attraction of the temple is the 35 feet high image of the deity of the Ulagalanda Perumal Temple. This image is a representative of ‘Vamana Roopam’, whose incarnation saved the ‘Devas’ from the hands of the demon King Mahabali.

History of Ulagalanda Perumal Temple :

The legend says that Mahabali, a worshipper of Vishnu has started harassing the ‘Devas’, with the help of his acquired powers. Lord Vishnu then worked out a humble scheme to make things right, where he took the form of ‘Vamana’ and forced Mahabali to not harass the Devas anymore. This manifestation of Lord Vishnu is worshipped as the Ulagalanda Perumal temple in Kancheepuram. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and incarnation of the Lord. There deity at the temple is about 35 meters long and depicts Lord Vishnu in the Vamana form.
