Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Munnar

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, also known as Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, is one of the most popular attractions in Munnar. Located in the foothills of the Western Ghats, this wildlife reserve covers an area of 25 square km. Several resident and migratory birds call this place their home, which was declared a bird sanctuary in 1983. Around 73 km from Munnar, the name of this sanctuary is after Dr. Salim Ali, a famous scientist and ornithologist. In his words, this place is the ‘richest bird habitat in peninsular India’.

You can spot as many as 270 avifauna species here, such as crested serpent eagle, crimson-throated barbet, rose billed roller, great Indian hornbill, Night Heron, Shrike, Sunbird, Bee-eater, black-winged kite, fairy bluebird, Sri Lanka frogmouth, rufous babbler, Malabar gray hornbill, Wynaad laughing thrush and white-bellied blue flycatcher.

The best time to visit Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is from October to March, when one can spot several colorful indigenous and migratory bird species. Do not forget to click photographs at this bird-watching paradise. The sanctuary is on the northern banks of the Periyar River.
