Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek Monastery or Dharma Chakra Center is located in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim, which is the perfect depiction of Buddhism's religious and cultural heritage in India. This renowned monastery was originally built by Wangchuk Dorje, 9th Karmapa Lama, in the mid-18th Century. It was rebuilt by Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, 16th Karmapa Lama, and is considered a shrine for Tibetan Buddhists. Moreover, the complex of the Gompa signifies the aim of the 16th Karmapa Lama, who wishes to spread the teachings of Buddha in the world.

One of the main attractions of this Gompa is the Golden Stupa, where several monks perform rituals and practice the Karma Kagyu lineage. The Stupa also constitutes precious relics of the 16th Karmapa and the world's unique religious scriptures. There is a massive prayer hall in the monastery, which is decorated with splendid murals, paintings, and thangkas. It also houses 1001 miniature golden models of Buddha. The main monastery is a 3-storeyed building with a golden sculpture on the top, an architectural marvel. It is one of the finest Gompas in the world.

Other attractions in Rumtek Monastery include a Buddhist shrine (main temple), Karma Shri Nalanda Institute (a college for Buddhist Higher Studies), nunnery, and protector's shrine.
