Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Rudyard Kipling describes it as 'the Work of Giants'. Here, "it" refers to the majestic Mehrangarh fort, which stands on a perpendicular cliff above the skyline of Jodhpur. Narrating the true spirit of Rathores, Mehrangarh is one of the best-preserved forts in India. An actual citadel of the Sun, Mehrangarh fort was founded by Rao Jodha in the 15th century. Since then, every new stone and brick added to the fortress describes the heroic and courageous tales of the Rathores.

For tourists to explore, Mehrangarh fort has several brilliantly crafted palaces, including Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana, Jhanki Mahal, and Phool Mahal. Moreover, to preserve the antiques of Mehrangarh, buildings in the fort premises serve as museums that host a collection of musical instruments, furniture, palanquins, paintings, and canons.

Mehrangarh Fort History

Built by Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) in 1459, Mehrangarh Fort is known for its beautiful architecture. The fort was built atop Bhaucheeria Hill, only 9 kilometers from Mandore. Since the Sun was the primary deity of the Rathores and "Mehran" means "sun," the fort was given the name Mehrangarh Fort. The previous Jodhpur kings, including Maldeo Maharaja, Ajit Singh Maharaja, Takhat Singh, and Maharaja Hanwant Singh, added much to the original building.
