Sanchi Travel Guide

Located at a distance of just 46 km from Bhopal, Sanchi is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage destination in India. It is home to Group of Buddhist Monuments including palace, temples, monolithic pillars and monasteries that are counted as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the attractions in Sanchi date back to 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Sanchi was the prime Buddhist center of India till 12th century AD.

Though the place remained deserted for around 600 years and was discovered in the year 1818, today Sanchi is visited by the followers of Lord Buddha in huge numbers. Sanchi is also linked to the great Mauryan Ruler Asoka and thus it also holds historical and Archaeological significance. After Kalinga War, when he embraced Buddhism, he erected several Buddhist monuments here. A visit to the place would be completely calming and a delightful experience.
