Gangtok Ropeway

The Gangtok Ropeway is one of the popular attractions in Sikkim, which offers breathtaking views of the region. This unmissable attraction is a double-cable zig back ropeway operational since December 2003.

Gangtok Ropeway offers scenic vistas of the city, which provides a unique experience for travelers. The Deorali Bazar can be easily seen from where you board the cable car. The majestic views of Mt Kanchenjunga snow peaks and valleys, and also, you can also enjoy sights of a river flowing some 3500 feet below open for travelers of the ropeway. Overall, a cable car ride in Gangtok is an unforgettable experience.

Each cable car can carry up to 24 passengers. There are three stations in this 1 km long ride (up and down is 2 km). The lowest station and boarding point is at Deorali near the Institute of Tibetology. The next station is Namnang and the topmost station is in Tashiling, next to the Secretariat. You can get off at any point, but it is best to take a 2-way ride.

Gangtok Ropeway price includes a two-way ride and you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery both ways. One way ride takes about 10 minutes. Do not forget to take pictures from the Gangtok cable car in Sikkim. You will find a small glass pane on either side of the cable car, which you can slide and take clear pictures through.

The Gangtok Ropeway has a mid-scale restaurant at its de-boarding. Relish coffee or local cuisines after an exciting day up and down the ropeway.

  • The two-way Gangtok ropeway tickets - INR 117 per adult (18 years and above).
  • For minors (below 18 years of age), the ticket price - is INR 77.
  • The Gangtok Ropeway ticket is free for children of age 3 and below.
  • The video camera has an additional charge - INR 100.

Best time to Visit Gangtok Ropeway

April to June is the best time to visit Gangtok to enjoy a ride in a cable car. The sky is clear and the weather is pleasant to enjoy picturesque views. If you are a snow lover, plan a trip to Gangtok, in Sikkim from October to December. Remember to book hotels beforehand, as it is the high tourist season in Gangtok.

How to Reach Gangtok Ropeway

The distance from MG Road in Gangtok to the cable car is approx. 5 km. Local buses are available throughout Gangtok that you can use to reach Deorali Bazar from where the cable ride ascends.

You can also take inter-state buses from Siliguri and Darjeeling to reach the boarding point to enjoy the Gangtok ropeway. In addition, Jeeps, taxis, autorickshaws, and shared vehicles are available to commute in Gangtok.
