One of the most popular tourist attractions in Gangtok, Do-Drul Chorten is a stupa situated on a hillock in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Present at just a short walking distance from the notable Research Institute of Tibetology, Do-Drul Chorten Stupa in Gangtok can be recognized as a golden top dome. This golden top is, in fact, visible from different places in Gangtok.
The legend goes that evil spirits once haunted this hillock on the stupa stands, and people who wandered around this region used to become their victims and died. Later, in 1945, the celebrated lama of Tibet, Trulshig Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava) visited this place and established the stupa to drive away the spirits.
If you look at the architecture, the stupa has 108 Mani Lhakor (Prayer Wheels), which are rotated by devout Buddhists while chanting 'Om Mani Padme Hum' (O Jewel in the Lotus) to invoke the Bodhisattva. Visitors too are allowed to rotate the prayer wheels in a clockwise direction. The Chorten Stupa preserves Kanjur holy books, relics, books of mantras, and several other religious objects. Best time to visit Do Drul Chorten
The ideal time to visit Gangtok is the spring season (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Clear, sunny, and breezy days make for an amazing holiday destination. This is when you can experience the beauty of Do-Drul Chorten Stupa.
However, mountain enthusiasts flock to the region throughout the year, except during the monsoon season. Though relatively chilly, the winter months of November and December bring out a new kind of beauty in the hills.
How to reach Do Drul Chorten
The Do Drul Chorten is located within the town of Gangtok in the Deorali area. It is an easy walk from the main town area. There is also the option of taking cabs to bring you to the destination.
As for Gangtok, you can easily reach there by road from Bagdogra, which is the closest airport. Whereas New Jalpaiguri is the closest railway station.
